Container Requirements
Containers must:
- Be 35 gallons or less
- Have secure covers and handles
- Contain bagged waste only
- Bagged waste should weigh no more than 40 pounds
Trash Collection Schedule
Trash is collected Monday through Friday throughout the City. Each property is assigned to one pickup day. View the Waste Pickup Schedule map for more information.
Trash is not collected on the following holidays:
- New Year's Day
- Memorial Day
- Independence Day
- Labor Day
- Thanksgiving Day
- Christmas Day
If your collection day falls on one of these holidays, please set your garbage containers at the curb the following day. This also includes the remainder of the days of that week following the holiday. Please note: If a holiday falls on a Sunday, collection will not be affected or delayed.
Preparation Requirements
All trash must be bagged and contained. Loose trash, scattered debris, and overflowing containers will not be collected. Materials should fit fully within the container and should not protrude from the top or sides.
Placement Guidelines
Containers should be placed at the curb before collection begins and positioned where crews can clearly access them.
Residents should avoid:
- Placing containers behind parked vehicles
- Blocking sidewalks or driveways
- Setting materials out after collection has already occurred
- Late placement is one of the most common causes of missed pickups.
Common Collection Issues
The most common collection problems include:
- Loose trash at the curb
- Overflowing containers
- Containers blocked by vehicles
- Materials placed out after collection
Rental move-outs and construction debris placed at the curb are also common issues and may not be collected through regular residential service.
Special Pickups
Residents with unusually large quantities of material or pickups needed outside their regular collection day should contact Car Trucking directly at 586-791-8480.
The residential collection program is intended for normal household waste and should not be used for commercial cleanouts or large-scale disposal.
Prohibited Materials
Certain materials may not be placed in regular residential trash, including:
- Hazardous household waste
- Construction debris
- Large amounts of concrete or masonry
- Automotive fluids
- Other prohibited waste streams
Residents should contact SOCRRA or DPW for guidance on disposal options.
