Stay Safe this Holiday Season with Lithium-Ion Batteries
Last week, Ferndale Fire Chief Teresa Robinson joined Executive Fire Commissioner Chuck Simms, Detroit Fire Marshal Don Thomas, State Fire Marshal Kevin Sehlmeyer, and Director of Grosse Pointe Public Safety John Alcorn to share safety tips and practices for lithium-ion batteries, particularly as we get close to the holiday season.
Many popular technology devices—including laptops, cell phones, electric bikes or scooters, yard tools, and more—have lithium batteries that generate a great power source when used and stored safely. However, they can pose a risk of fire if not handled properly.
Here are some fire safety tips when using, charging, or storing these devices:
- Please make sure that all devices have the appropriate compatible chargers.
- If you need to replace a battery or have a used item, be sure to seek out components that are deemed safe or certified.
- Devices that are fully charged should be removed from the charger.
- Move devices away from entrances and exits in case a fire evacuation is needed.
- Do not put batteries in the trash, recycle them instead.
- Stop using the device if it is damaged or shows any signs of impending damage.
- If a device is charging, keep it on a flat surface.
- Store batteries away from anything flammable.
