2024 Halloween Safety
Happy Halloween, Ferndale! Here are some tips and reminders to keep you and your loved ones safe during the fun and spooky celebration.
City of Ferndale Reminders:
- There are no enforced trick-or-treat hours. Activity typically occurs between 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Be mindful of homes that are not participating.
- The City of Ferndale promotes inclusivity and equity in everything we do, and we encourage this outlook with Halloween costumes. Consider refraining from insensitive and offensive costumes toward race, gender, sexual orientation, culture, religion, ability, and other identity factors. We want this to be an inclusive, fun, and welcoming holiday for all.
- Please look out for yourself and others. And most importantly, have fun (and eat candy)!
Fire Safety: Decorating
- Decorate with battery-operated candles.
- Move all decorations away from a heat source, like a fireplace, wood stove, or space heater.
- Throw away any light strands that have frayed or pinched wires.
- Turn off lights before going to bed or leaving the house.
Fire Safety: Cooking
- Put anything flammable away from stovetops, like food packages, trays, oven mitts, wood utensils, or towels.
- Keep an eye on food that is cooking, roasting, simmering, or baking.
- Set a timer if necessary and turn off burners before exiting the kitchen.
- Have a “kid-free” zone in the kitchen where hot food and drinks are.
Police Safety: Trick or Treating
- Take time to locate the area and plan a route.
- Remove tripping hazards from your porch or walkways.
- If in doubt, throw it out. Discard candy that looks suspicious.
- Check outdoor lights and replace burned-out bulbs.
- Keep pets in safe areas away from trick-or-treaters.
- Take extra time to check for pedestrians while driving.
- Remember to look both ways before crossing the street.
- Eliminate distractions while driving through neighborhoods.
- Avoid houses that don’t have lights on.
- Teach children these safety tips.
Please be safe and have fun!
