Amazon Drone Delivery Information

Since the launch of Amazon's Prime Air drone delivery service, the City of Ferndale has seen an increase in commercial drone activity within our limits. Because Ferndale falls within the radius of the Regional Fulfillment Center, delivery activity in our skies has increased. Below is helpful information and frequently asked questions.

What is the purpose of the drones?

The drones are used to deliver Amazon packages. They fly to a property, lower themselves to drop off the package, and then rise back up to continue their route.

Why are the drones in Ferndale?

Amazon’s Prime Air drone delivery service is based at a nearby regional fulfillment center. Because Ferndale is close by, drones often fly over the city to make deliveries.

Who has authoritative control over the drones?

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is the only agency with legal authority over U.S. airspace. Because Amazon’s drones operate under an FAA Air Carrier Certificate (Part 135), local governments like Ferndale cannot ban flights, establish no-fly zones, or regulate aircraft noise. The City of Ferndale does not have the power to regulate drones flying over the city.

What are the regulations around privacy?

According to Amazon, the cameras do not stream live video. The images they capture are usually blurry or low-quality because the drones move so fast. Videos are kept private and can be reviewed only by certain Amazon technicians in the event of a malfunction or safety issue. The drones use low-resolution cameras to help them avoid obstacles like branches, power lines, and birds while flying.

How can an issue or complaint be reported?

If you have a complaint or concern, the fastest way to get help is to contact Amazon or the FAA directly. For Amazon Air issues, email amazondronefeedback@amazon.com. For dangerous flying, property damage, near-misses, or safety violations, visit the FAA portal at hotline.faa.gov.
