About the Board
The Commission provides oversight of the civil service system, which exists to provide fair and equal opportunities for members of public service; to establish conditions of service that will attract employees of character and capacity; and to improve the efficiency of personnel administration. The Commission provides an avenue of appeal for disciplinary action, approves test and qualification procedures, approves eligibility lists for promotions and new hires, and oversees the appointment and probationary periods of full-time employees.
The Civil Service Board meets on the third Thursday of every month at 7:30 a.m. The Commission consists of three members, each serving for six-year terms, who are appointed by the Mayor with the advice and consent of the City Council. Members must be City residents qualified by experience and/or training in matters related to personnel/governmental administration. The Human Resources Director serves as staff liaison through virtue of office. Preferred qualifications/areas of expertise include:
