Yard Waste 2025 Season

Public Works

If the sunshine makes you want to spruce up your yard, you’re in luck! This year, the Public Works Department and SOCRRA are kicking off the annual yard waste pickup program two weeks ahead of schedule, starting the week of March 23, 2026, and running through the week of December 14, 2026. Set your yard waste out in paper kraft bags or a labeled container (labels are available at City Hall or the DPW yard) at the curb by 7:00 a.m. on your regular trash day.

Yard waste is: Grass clippings, leaves, sod, garden waste, tree and shrub trimmings, small stumps, untreated and unpainted wood boards (nails removed), straw bales, and similar items.

Yard waste is not: Food, pet waste, noxious weeds, grill charcoal, paper products, plastic bags, pumpkins, and other items that belong in the trash or recycling.

For a full list of acceptable items, visit bit.ly/490ynxm.

Yard waste is collected weekly on your regular trash day, from the week of Monday, March 23, 2026, to the week of December 14, 2026. (Collection is starting early this year!) Please place your yard waste out at the curb by 7:00 a.m. on the morning of your scheduled pickup date.

Yard waste can either be placed in a reusable container with the Ferndale Compost Yard Waste label (available at City Hall or the DPW yard) or paper kraft bags (available at most local hardware stores.)

Did you know we have a compost program? (We’re very proud.)

Composting is a sustainable alternative to food waste disposal that turns food waste into rich, healthy soil. Register for the City’s residential program at bit.ly/4alG8iv.

All food waste goes to a certified compost facility.

Compostable items include: coffee/filters, grease, fruits/vegetables, bread/grains, beans, eggshells, napkins/paper towels, flowers, dairy products, and meat/bones.

Items that are NOT compostable include: styrofoam, pet waste, glass, metal, and plastic.

If you have any questions or concerns, please call the Public Works Department at 248-546-2519
