Winter Weather and Temperature Care

Michigan winters can be cold, icy, and full of hazardous weather and temperature conditions. The Ferndale Fire Department has a number of safety tips for you and your loved ones to stay safe and warm.

For questions, concerns, or additional information or safety tips, reach out to the Fire Department.

Stay Warm

  • Wear layers and protect all exposed areas from frostbite during extreme weather.
  • Get immediate attention for cold, sore, and painful sensations, pins and needles, and numbness.
  • If showing signs of frostbite or hypothermia, get to a warm area, remove wet/cold clothing, warm up with dry blankets or clothing, and place the affected skin in warm water (not hot!). Do not put pressure or use artificial heat sources on the area.
  • When in doubt, call 911. The Fire Department is here for you.

Stay Safe

  • Be careful walking, biking, and driving in snowy conditions.
  • Salt your walkways and driveways.
  • Wear proper footwear and take slow, short steps when shoveling to avoid injury. Dress warm, stay hydrated, take frequent breaks, and only shovel or salt small amounts of snow at a time.
  • Clear fire hydrants of ice and snow so firefighters have easy access in emergencies.

Stay Alert

Be careful with heat sources:

  • Keep candles 12 inches away from anything that can burn.
  • Use outdoor generators at least 20 feet away from doors, windows, and garages to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning.
  • Do not place anything that can burn 3 feet or closer to a fireplace, wood stove, or space heater.
  • Never use an oven or stovetop to heat your home.
  • Plug space heaters directly into wall outlets. Never use an extension cord or power strip.
  • Always use a metal or heat-tempered glass screen when using a fireplace.
  • Have chimneys and vents cleaned and inspected by qualified professionals at least once a year.
