Martin Rd Park Construction FAQ

How are the park improvements being funded?

The total project cost of $2,156,039 is 100% grant funded. Parks & Recreation has secured a Michigan Department of Natural Resources (MDNR) SPARK Grant ($951,370), a Michigan Enhancement Grant ($500,000), and a Community Project Funding (HUD) Grant ($704,669) to support the project.

When will construction begin and be completed?

Construction is scheduled to begin on April 27, 2026 and is anticipated to be completed by the end of October 2026.

Will the park be open during construction?

Yes, the park and amenities will remain open during construction. Any temporary closures or impacts will be communicated through the City’s website and Parks & Recreation Facebook page.

Can I still rent a pavilion or park field during construction?

Yes. Both pavilions and athletic fields will remain available for rent. If any construction activities impact a scheduled rental, renters will be notified in advance, however this is unlikely.

What are the construction hours?

Per City ordinance, construction is permitted from 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM, Monday through Saturday. Any work outside of these hours requires City Council approval.

Was the community involved in the design process?

Yes. The project planning began in 2024. During that time, the Parks & Recreation Department, the City Manager’s Office, and the City’s architect (Neumann Smith) hosted three community design meetings, presented at multiple public meetings (City Council, PaRC, and Planning Commission), and gathered feedback through surveys.

How can I stay informed about the project?

You can stay updated by following the Ferndale Parks & Recreation Facebook page, visiting the City’s website, or emailing Recreation@ferndalemi.gov.

Will there be restrooms and changing tables available during construction?

Temporary portable restrooms will be available and maintained during construction. The existing restroom building will be demolished as part of the project. Changing tables will not be available, so we encourage families to plan ahead.

What improvements are being made?

The project includes construction of a new restroom and concession building with outdoor patio seating, park office, and storage space.

Will construction impact parking or access?

The main walking path near the restroom building will be closed 5/1 – 5/5 during building demolition. There may be temporary impacts to pathways during construction. Any significant changes will be communicated in advance. Parking will not be impacted.

Is the construction area safe?

Yes. Construction areas will be clearly marked and secured. Please follow posted signage and avoid restricted areas.

Are there any other parks being improved?

Yes. Additional improvements are planned for other parks in 2026–2027, including expanded play equipment at Martin Rd Park and replacement of the inline rink at Harding Park, along with accessibility and landscaping upgrades.
