Fire Holiday Safety Tips

The Fire Departmen's top priority is keeping the community safe and informed, especially during the holiday season. Pleae familiarize yourself with these safety tips to keep you and your loved ones safe.

Cooking

  • Put anything flammable away from stovetops, like food packages, trays, oven mitts, wood utensils, or towels.
  • Keep an eye on food that is cooking, roasting, simmering, or baking.
  • Set a timer if necessary and turn off burners before exiting the kitchen.
  • Have a “kid-free” zone in the kitchen where hot food and drinks are.
  • Use turkey fryers outdoors and away from a wooden deck or garage.

Decorating

  • Decorate with battery-operated candles.
  • Move all decorations away from a heat source, like a fireplace, wood stove, or space heater.
  • Throw away any light strands that have frayed or pinched wires.
  • Turn off lights before going to bed or leaving the house.
  • Water real holiday trees daily. Dry trees can pose a risk of fire.
